Varmam Thokanam Therapy – A Siddha techniques to revive and rejuvenate the body and mind

Varmam Thokkanam is the Siddha way of touch therapy ( An applied system procedure or therapeutic massage ). It is the physical manipulation of the body usually done with or with out oil application and It is very effective for neurological and musculoskeletal problems. It also promotes mental and physical wellness


Varmam is a subtle energy that enables the functioning of whole body, mind and soul. The places where this energy resides and travel and help to activate both body and life is called Varmam points.


These points are the reservoirs of pranic energy and it is distributed throughout the body at 108 locations. When the flow of pranic energy is affected by imbalance of three humours i.e Vata, Pitta and Kapha or due to injury, stress, strain, abnormal physical activity, abnormal food habits etc. it disturbs the metabolic and physiological activity of the organ or region concerned and this ultimately results in disease and pain.



The objective of "Varmam Thaokanam Therapy" is to stimulate these affected varmam points through special manipulation and massage techniques to unblock and energize the energy flow to its normal condition, so that various Acute/Chronic diseases /disorders /pain can be cured. VARMAM Therapy can also work independent without medicines.


Thokkanam is one of the 32 types of external medicines mentioned in siddha literature. In this technique, the physician uses his hands on the body of the patient in 9 different unique ways with or without using medicated oil with a curative or palliative point of view. The 9 different techniques in thokkanam which makes siddha medicine unique in all aspects. They are :

  1. Thattal or Patting technique

  2. Irukkal or Tightening

  3. Pidithal or Holding

  4. Murukkal or Twisting

  5. Kattal or Tying

  6. Azhuthal or Pressing

  7. Izhuthal or Pulling

  8. Mallathuthal or Supinating

  9. Asaithal or shaking
